PRACTICE AND PERFECTION - LEADERSHIP SECTION (AGES 15-17)
Leadership development is a cornerstone of Big Cove YMCA Camp. We believe
good leaders are those who combine confidence and skill in the outdoors
along with a sensitivity and dedication to the personal growth and development
of young people. Our leadership development program is designed to meet
all these goals in a way that can be applied to all aspects of life.
Leadership participants will live in tipis away from the main camp area
and will function in co-ed groups of 8-12 participants, supervised by
two staff. We feel the two-tiered Leadership Program at Big Cove provides
opportunities for growth and development rarely found today.
Leadership 1 (Ages 15-16):
Leadership 1 is the first step in the Leadership Development Program
at Big Cove. It is an exciting and intensive four-week program designed
to build new skills, enhance self-confidence, and promote teamwork.
All participants will take part in a challenging ten-day ocean canoe
trip and a five-day hike. While at camp, L1 participants will hone their
skills in canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, high ropes, and many of
the other programs Big Cove has to offer. L1 is unlike any other program
offered at Big Cove and is perfect for those seeking new challenges,
adventure, and fun!
LEADERSHIP 1 (AGES 15-16, $1325)
Session A. June 30th - July 27th
Session B. July 29th - Aug 25th
Leadership 2 (Ages 16-17):
Leadership 2 is a four-week leadership-training program designed for
successful graduates of the Leadership 1 program, or those with previous
leadership experience. The L2 Program focuses on the development of
counselling, teaching, programming, and communication skills. Participants
will have the opportunity to work directly with groups of campers, under
the supervision of experienced camp staff. The L2 group will go on a
five-day outtrip, as well as a trip to visit one of the Community Service
Camps managed by The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth. Participants
will also be certified in Standard First Aid and CPR. Many of our Leadership
2 graduates go on to work as staff at Big Cove. All applicants are interviewed
and selected based on leadership interest, skills and potential. Please
